Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (Gabriel H.)

I just read a graphic novel, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson that portrayed a common good versus evil story, with a twist that the "bad guy" is good. One day a shape shifting girl named Nimona steps in to the evil Lord Ballister Blackheart's lab because she wants to be a villain too. When the king and former friend of Blackheart, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin shows up in Blackheart's lab with his goons and Nimona kills all but Goldenloin, it proves she is a killer unlike Blackheart who is too afraid to kill. Nimona finds evidence that Blackheart decodes that proves that his enemy institute, the Institute of Law and Heroics, has been harvesting the most rare and deadliest plant called Jaderoot. Blackheart and Nimona poison the food everywhere themselves with a poison that will hurt but not kill so it seems that it's from the Jaderoot infesting the crop so the villagers will suspect the institute of having Jaderoot. The Institutes leader wants Nimona and Blackheart dead, so they try to capture Nimona to harness her powers, but she escapes on a rampage until Blackheart subdues her and puts her back to her original form.
This book connects to real life because it shows how not every villain is bad, and not every person on the "good" side is completely good. This reminds me of all the racism going on with Michael Brown and others, because I want to tell the policemen to stop being so racist, but also to the protesters to start seeing the blurred lines. Just because some police stations and officers are so racist does not mean ALL the police are racist. Just like because the institution is evil doesn't mean Goldenloin is evil.
I would reccomend this book to someone who is in need of a book to read quickly. It's an extremly quick read and has a confusing ending but is still heartfelt and interesting. Looking for a comic book that will leave you thinking? Not this one. Looking for a comic book with a basic story and you're in need of a book, yeah this is the one. This is also a good book if you need to finish your summer homework and you pass by a bookstore and grab a graphic novel quick. :)
