Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan

Counting by 7's is about a quirky girl, Willow Chance and her life as a new middle school student. Being a genius, she got a perfect score on one of the first tests of the year- the only one in the state to do so- but everybody seems to think she cheated. So after having a long talk with the principal, it is decided she will see a behavioral counselor named Dell Duke. Their sessions are awkward and not productive, but one day, when Willow shows up early to her session, she meets Mai and her brother, Quang-ha, and they soon become the first friends Willow has had in a while. But one day, when Dell Duke drives them home, they find Willow's house surrounded by cop cars. After eavesdropping on Dell's conversation with the cops, she finds out her parents-the only people that have ever loved her- have died. Thankfully, Mai and her family, and Dell Duke, are by her side.
If you like books with a lot of up's and downs, but have a happy ending, you should read Counting by 7's.
